Choosing the right gutter material affects how long your gutters last, how much maintenance they need, and how they look on your home. Here's an honest comparison.

Aluminum Gutters

The most popular choice — and for good reason.

  • Cost: $8-$18 per linear foot installed

  • Lifespan: 20-30 years

  • Weight: Very light (easy on fascia boards)

  • Rust: Never rusts

  • Colors: 25+ factory-baked enamel colors

  • Best for: Most residential homes

Aluminum is our #1 recommendation for Houston homes. It's lightweight so it doesn't stress fascia boards, it never rusts (critical in our humid climate), and the factory-applied color finish lasts decades without peeling. We use .032" heavy-gauge aluminum — about 20% thicker than what most competitors use.

Steel Gutters

Maximum strength for demanding applications.

  • Cost: $12-$22 per linear foot installed

  • Lifespan: 15-25 years (galvanized), 50+ years (stainless)

  • Weight: Heavy (requires stronger fascia)

  • Rust: Galvanized will eventually rust; stainless won't

  • Colors: Limited (usually painted)

  • Best for: Commercial buildings, snow-heavy regions

Steel gutters are the strongest option, but they're heavier and more expensive than aluminum. Galvanized steel will eventually rust in Houston's humid environment. Stainless steel won't rust but costs significantly more. For most Houston residential homes, aluminum is a better value. Steel is more common in commercial gutter installations.

Copper Gutters

The premium choice for luxury and historic homes.

  • Cost: $25-$45 per linear foot installed

  • Lifespan: 50-100 years

  • Weight: Moderate

  • Rust: Never (develops green patina)

  • Colors: Natural copper → brown → green patina over time

  • Best for: Historic homes, luxury properties, architectural statements

Copper gutters are stunning and virtually indestructible. They develop a beautiful green patina over 10-15 years that many homeowners prize. The joints are soldered (not sealed) for a truly seamless, watertight connection. The downside is cost — copper gutters are 3-5x the price of aluminum.

Zinc Gutters

The European choice.

  • Cost: $20-$35 per linear foot installed

  • Lifespan: 50-80 years

  • Weight: Moderate

  • Rust: Never (develops gray patina)

  • Colors: Natural zinc gray

  • Best for: Modern and contemporary architecture

Zinc is popular in Europe but less common in the US. Like copper, it develops a natural patina and lasts decades. It's a good choice for modern homes where the matte gray aesthetic complements clean architectural lines.

Our Recommendation for Houston

Aluminum is the best value for 90% of Houston homes. It handles our climate, never rusts, comes in every color, and costs a fraction of premium materials. For luxury or historic homes where budget isn't the primary concern, copper is a worthy investment that will outlast the home itself.
