Gutters collect the water. Downspouts deliver it safely away from your home. Without proper downspout placement, even the best gutter system will fail to protect your foundation. Here's everything you need to know.
The Basic Rule
One downspout for every 20-30 linear feet of gutter. For Houston homes that experience heavy rainfall, we recommend the more aggressive end of this range — one downspout every 20-25 feet.
How to Calculate What You Need
A typical Houston home with 150-200 linear feet of gutters needs:
- Minimum: 6 downspouts
- Recommended: 8-10 downspouts
- Heavy rain areas or large roof surfaces: 10-12 downspouts
Placement Rules
1. At every low point — Gutters are pitched toward the downspouts. Every low point in the gutter run must have a downspout to prevent water from pooling.
2. Near corners — Placing downspouts near corners keeps the gutter runs short and reduces the volume of water any single section needs to handle.
3. Away from doors and walkways — Nobody wants to walk through a waterfall to get to their front door. Route downspouts to areas where discharge won't create puddles in high-traffic zones.
4. Away from the foundation — Downspouts should discharge water at least 4-6 feet from the foundation. Extensions, splash blocks, or underground drainage lines accomplish this.
5. Consider your landscaping — Route water away from flower beds, gardens, and areas prone to erosion. Toward lawn areas or hardscape is ideal.
Downspout Sizing
| Gutter Size | Downspout Size | Handles |
|---|---|---|
| 5" K-style | 2"x3" rectangular | Up to 600 sq ft of roof |
| 6" K-style | 3"x4" rectangular | Up to 1,200 sq ft of roof |
| 6" half-round | 4" round | Up to 1,000 sq ft of roof |
In Houston, oversizing downspouts is always better than undersizing. A 3"x4" downspout handles twice the water volume of a 2"x3" and costs very little extra. Use our gutter size calculator to match downspouts to your roof area.
Underground Drainage
For the cleanest look and best foundation protection, we recommend connecting downspouts to underground drainage lines. These buried PVC pipes carry water 10-20 feet from the house and discharge it at a safe distance. Options include:
- Pop-up emitters — Water pops up from a flush-mounted cap in the lawn
- French drain tie-ins — Connects to an existing French drain system
- Rain garden routing — Directs water to a designated rain garden
- Rain barrel connections — Captures water for irrigation use
Common Mistakes
- Too few downspouts — Causes overflow during heavy rain
- Downspouts dumping at the foundation — The #1 cause of preventable foundation damage in Houston
- Using undersized downspouts — A 2"x3" downspout on a large roof section creates a bottleneck
- Not accounting for pitch — Downspouts at the wrong end of the gutter run leave water standing in the gutters
