Not every gutter problem requires a full replacement. A loose hanger, a small leak, or a clogged downspout can usually be repaired quickly and affordably. But there are clear signs that your gutters have reached the end of their useful life and repairs are just throwing money at a failing system. Not sure whether to repair vs. replace? Start with these warning signs.

1. Multiple Leaks Along the Runs

A single leak at a joint can be resealed. But if you're seeing water dripping from multiple points along your gutters — especially along the runs (not just at joints) — the metal itself is failing. This often means the gutters have corroded through or the seams in sectional gutters have deteriorated beyond repair.

Replace if: You have 3+ leaks, or leaks appear in the body of the gutter (not at joints).

2. Gutters Pulling Away from the House

When gutters pull away from the fascia board, it's often because the fascia wood has rotted from years of water exposure. You can rehang gutters on rotted fascia, but they'll pull away again within months. The right fix is new fascia board repair and new gutters.

Replace if: The fascia behind the gutters is soft, discolored, or crumbling.

3. Visible Rust or Corrosion

Steel and galvanized gutters eventually rust. Once rust starts, it spreads quickly and eats through the metal. You can spot-treat small areas, but widespread rust means the protective coating has failed.

Replace if: Rust spots are larger than a quarter or appear in multiple locations.

4. Sagging or Uneven Sections

Gutters should have a consistent, slight pitch toward the downspouts. If you can see visible sagging or sections that hold standing water, the hangers have failed or the gutters have been weighed down by debris and water over time.

Replace if: Sagging persists after rehanging, or the gutter metal itself has warped.

5. Paint Peeling on or Near Gutters

Peeling paint on your gutters or on the fascia/siding directly behind them is a sign of persistent moisture exposure. This means water is getting where it shouldn't — either through leaks, overflow, or condensation from poor drainage.

Replace if: Paint damage extends to the fascia, soffit, or siding.

6. Water Damage or Staining on Siding

Orange, brown, or green stains on your siding below the gutters indicate overflow or leakage. If cleaning the gutters doesn't solve the staining, the gutters themselves aren't channeling water properly.

Replace if: Staining returns after gutter cleaning.

7. Foundation Cracks or Erosion

This is the most expensive consequence of failing gutters. Learn more about how bad gutters cause foundation damage. If you notice cracks in your foundation, erosion trenches below your roofline, or water in your crawl space, your gutters are not doing their job.

Replace if: You see any foundation issues — and get them inspected immediately.

8. Your Gutters Are 20+ Years Old

Even well-maintained gutters have a finite lifespan. Aluminum gutters typically last 20-30 years, steel gutters 15-20 years, and copper gutters 50+ years. If your gutters are approaching their expected lifespan, proactive replacement prevents the costly damage that comes from a sudden failure.

When Repair Makes Sense

  • Single leak at a joint — reseal it ($50-$150)

  • One section sagging — rehang it ($75-$200)

  • Clogged downspout — flush it ($50-$100)

  • Minor hanger damage — replace hangers ($5-$10 each)
