All-Pro Gutter Installation Team
25+ years of gutter expertise in Houston, TX • Published 2026-01-28
Houston doesn't have four traditional seasons — we have storm season, hot season, brief cold season, and pollen season. Your gutter maintenance should match our actual weather patterns, not a generic calendar from up north. For how frequently to clean, read our guide on how often you should clean your gutters.
January - February: Winter Inspection
Houston's mild winters are the perfect time for a thorough inspection while trees are bare and you can see the gutter system clearly.
Checklist:
- Walk around your home and visually inspect all gutters from the ground
- Look for sagging sections, visible gaps, or misalignment
- Check that all downspouts are firmly connected and pointing away from the foundation
- Verify downspout extensions are in place (they often get moved during lawn care)
- After any freeze event, check for ice damage or popped seams
March - April: Pre-Storm Season Prep
This is the most important maintenance window. Spring storms are coming, and your gutters need to be ready.
Checklist:
- Clean all gutters thoroughly (or schedule a professional cleaning)
- Flush every downspout with a hose to verify flow
- Clear any debris from underground drainage outlets
- Check that splash blocks and extensions are positioned correctly
- Inspect gutter guards (if installed) for accumulated pollen, seed pods, or oak catkins
- Tighten any loose hangers
- Reseal any joints that show signs of weeping
May - June: Storm Season Begins
Hurricane season officially starts June 1. By now your gutters should be clean and fully functional.
Checklist:
- After each major storm, do a quick visual check for damage or debris accumulation
- Check for standing water in gutters (indicates pitch problems or clogs)
- Monitor for mosquito activity near gutters (sign of standing water)
- Verify downspouts are flowing freely after heavy rain
July - August: Mid-Summer Check
Houston's hottest months bring afternoon thunderstorms almost daily. UV exposure is at its peak.
Checklist:
- Quick debris check (cottonwood fluff, magnolia leaves, and seed pods accumulate)
- Look for wasp or bird nests forming in or near gutters
- Check for algae growth on north-facing gutter sections
- Ensure sprinklers aren't spraying directly into gutters (adds unnecessary debris)
September - October: Peak Hurricane Season
Historically the most active period for tropical weather in Houston.
Checklist: (See our full hurricane gutter preparation guide)
- Verify all gutters are securely mounted before any tropical system approaches
- Clean gutters to reduce weight and prevent overflow during sustained heavy rain
- After any hurricane or tropical storm: inspect immediately for damage
- Check for shingle granules in gutters (indicates roof damage from wind)
- Remove any storm debris (branches, leaves, roofing material)
November - December: Post-Fall Cleanup
Fall leaf drop peaks in November in Houston. This is gutter cleaning season.
Checklist:
- Schedule a thorough gutter cleaning after leaf drop is complete (late November)
- Clean and inspect all gutter guards
- Check for pine needle accumulation (pine needles are the #1 clog culprit in Houston)
- Verify all components are secure before winter cold snaps
- Consider scheduling a professional inspection to catch any issues before the new year
Year-Round Rules
- Never ignore standing water in your gutters — it means something is blocked or pitched wrong
- Check after every major storm — 60 seconds of walking around your house can prevent expensive damage
- Keep trees trimmed — Branches within 10 feet of your roof are future gutter clogs
- Don't lean ladders against gutters — Use a ladder stabilizer to avoid denting and misaligning your gutters
