Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, but Houston's peak risk is August through October. Whether it's a tropical storm or a Category 4 hurricane, your gutters play a critical role in protecting your home from water damage. For year-round planning, see our seasonal maintenance checklist. Here's how to prepare.

Before Hurricane Season (May-June)

Complete cleaning — Clear all gutters of debris. During sustained heavy rain, even a partial clog can cause catastrophic overflow. Schedule a professional gutter cleaning if needed. Clean gutters handle storm water; clogged gutters redirect it into your home.

Tighten everything — Check every hanger, bracket, and downspout connection. Hurricane-force winds can rip loose gutters off the house, creating both water damage and flying debris hazards.

Check hanger spacing — Gutters mounted with hangers every 24 inches withstand wind loads far better than the 36" spacing some installers use. If your hangers are spaced wider than 24", consider adding intermediate hangers before storm season.

Inspect downspout connections — Every elbow, adapter, and extension should be secure. A disconnected downspout during a hurricane dumps all of the collected water directly at your foundation.

Clear underground drainage — If you have buried downspout lines, verify the outlets are clear. Flush the system with a hose to confirm flow. A blocked underground line causes backup and overflow.

Trim overhanging branches — Branches within 10 feet of your roof are potential gutter destroyers during high winds. Have them trimmed before storm season.

When a Storm Is Approaching

Final inspection — Walk around your home and verify all gutters and downspouts are intact and clear.

Secure loose items — Move patio furniture, potted plants, and yard decorations away from the house. Wind-blown objects can damage gutters.

Document your system — Take photos of your gutters and roof from multiple angles. This documentation is valuable for insurance claims if damage occurs.

After the Storm

Inspect immediately — As soon as it's safe, check your gutters for:

  • Sections pulled away from the house

  • Dents or punctures from debris

  • Missing downspouts or extensions

  • Accumulated storm debris (branches, leaves, shingle material)

  • Standing water (indicates clogged or damaged sections)

Check for shingle granules — If you find a significant amount of roofing granules in your gutters, your roof may have sustained wind damage. Contact a roofer for an inspection.

Clear debris — Remove any storm debris from gutters and downspouts as soon as possible. Wet debris gets heavy quickly and can pull gutters down.

Document damage — Photograph any damage for insurance claims before making repairs.
