Choosing the right gutter size is one of the most important decisions in a gutter installation. Too small and they overflow during heavy Houston rain. Too large and they look disproportionate and cost more than necessary. Here's how to figure out what your Houston home needs.
The Quick Answer for Houston
| Roof Section Size | Recommended Gutter | Recommended Downspout |
|---|---|---|
| Under 600 sq ft | 5" K-style | 2"x3" |
| 600-1,200 sq ft | 5" K-style | 3"x4" |
| 1,200+ sq ft | 6" K-style | 3"x4" |
| Any size, steep pitch | 6" K-style | 3"x4" |
Note: These recommendations are specific to Houston's rainfall intensity (up to 4" per hour during severe storms). Other regions with lighter rainfall can get away with smaller gutters.
How to Calculate Your Roof Drainage Area
The drainage area isn't just the footprint of your roof — it's the area that actually sheds water to each gutter section.
Step 1: Measure the footprint — The horizontal area covered by the roof section draining to the gutter. For example, a gutter that runs along a 40-foot wall with 15 feet of roof behind it has a footprint of 600 sq ft (40 x 15).
Step 2: Adjust for pitch — Steeper roofs shed water faster, which increases the peak flow rate. Multiply by the pitch factor:
| Roof Pitch | Factor |
|---|---|
| Flat to 4/12 | 1.0 |
| 5/12 to 8/12 | 1.1 |
| 9/12 to 12/12 | 1.2 |
| Over 12/12 | 1.3 |
Step 3: Adjust for rainfall — Houston's maximum rainfall intensity is approximately 7.5 inches per hour for a 5-minute peak storm. This is already factored into our recommendations above.
When to Upsize
Even if the math says 5" gutters are sufficient, consider upgrading to 6" if:
- Your home has large, steep roof sections
- You have valleys where two roof planes meet (these concentrate water)
- Previous gutters overflowed during heavy rain
- You're in a flood-prone area where every inch of water management counts
- You plan to add gutter guards (they slightly reduce effective opening size)
The Cost of Oversizing
Upgrading from 5" to 6" gutters typically adds only $2-$4 per linear foot — or $300-$600 for a typical home. This modest upcharge buys 40% more water capacity and effectively future-proofs your system against Houston's heaviest storms.
Our Recommendation
For most Houston homes, we recommend 6" K-style gutters with 3"x4" downspouts as the standard installation. The cost difference is minimal, the performance improvement is significant, and you'll never have to worry about capacity during even the heaviest storms. It's a small upcharge that eliminates overflow risk entirely. See our pricing guide for current costs, or request a free estimate.
