One of the coolest things about seamless gutters is that they're manufactured right in your driveway. There's no factory, no shipping — just a portable machine, a roll of aluminum, and a skilled technician. Here's exactly how it works.
Step 1: The Raw Material
Seamless gutters start as a flat aluminum coil — a continuous roll of pre-painted aluminum that's typically .027" or .032" thick. The coil is about 11-12 inches wide (for 5" gutters) or 14-15 inches wide (for 6" gutters). Each coil contains enough material for about 150-300 linear feet of gutter.
The aluminum is pre-finished with a baked enamel coating in your chosen color. This coating is applied at the metal mill before the coil is shipped, which is why seamless gutter colors are so durable — they're baked on, not painted on.
Step 2: The Gutter Machine
The gutter machine is a portable roll-forming machine that mounts on a trailer or truck bed. It's essentially a series of precisely aligned rollers that gradually bend the flat aluminum strip into the gutter profile.
The machine has 20-30 sets of rollers, each one bending the metal a few degrees more than the last. By the time the aluminum exits the machine, it's been transformed from a flat strip into a perfectly shaped K-style or half-round gutter profile.
Step 3: Measuring and Cutting
Before fabrication begins, our technicians measure every roofline section precisely. They account for:
- Total run length
- Location of downspout connections
- Inside and outside corners
- Proper pitch (typically 1/4" per 10 feet toward the nearest downspout)
- Fascia board condition and alignment
The gutter machine feeds out the formed profile continuously, and the technician cuts each piece to the exact length needed. A 47-foot run gets a 47-foot gutter — one single, seamless piece.
Step 4: End Caps and Corners
The ends of each gutter run get sealed with end caps — small formed pieces that are riveted and sealed to create a watertight closure. Inside and outside corners are hand-fabricated on-site by cutting and folding the gutter material at precise angles, then sealing the joints.
These corner connections and end caps are the only joints in a seamless gutter system, and they're sealed with industrial-grade, UV-resistant sealant that lasts for decades.
Step 5: Installation
The formed gutters are carefully lifted into position along the fascia board. They're secured using hidden hangers — interior brackets that clip onto the gutter lip and screw through the back into the fascia board. We space these every 24 inches for maximum holding strength.
The gutters are installed with a precise pitch toward the downspout locations, ensuring water flows smoothly and doesn't pool anywhere in the system.
Step 6: Downspout Connection
Outlet holes are cut into the gutter at each downspout location. Drop outlets are installed and sealed, and the downspout sections are assembled from the outlet down to the ground level. Elbows, extensions, and brackets are added to route water away from the foundation.
